TRIO Talent Search

The mission of Texarkana College Talent Search is to inspire program participants who have a desire to continue their education after high school graduation. Through personalized support and a variety of academic, cultural, and social activities, we empower these young minds to discover their true potential, break through barriers, and achieve their educational aspirations.

Talent Search Program Objectives

  1. To positively impact college entrance test scores, grade point averages, and persistence towards high school graduation.
  2. To make connections to high quality tutoring and academic counseling for all participants.
  3. To assist participants with the preparation of college applications and financial aid forms.
  4. To expose students to new academic, social, and cultural learning experiences.
  5. To encourage post-secondary enrollment

Academic Year Component

From September through July, participants are provided support services that work to develop the total person while working to ensure academic progress and improvement. Services include:

Students in WorkshopStudents are provided individual sessions and group workshops that are designed to focus on each student’s academic progress and to develop post-secondary options.

ACT Prep sessionStudents have the opportunity to participant in ACT bootcamps, practice test, skills, and strategy workshops.

Tutoring sessionTutoring sessions are for the purpose of improving the student’s GPA and enhancing study skills. Talent Search staff helps connect students to tutoring resources on school campuses and provides study support sessions at Texarkana College upon student request.

Students on a field trip visiting a baseball stadiumStudents are treated to field trips such as visits to museums, theatre productions, and talks given by well-known speakers and authors.

Changing a car batteryStudents engage in practical experiences such as cooking and nutrition classes, acquire basic automotive skills like, changing a tire and checking oil, receive basic first aid training, and participate in workshops on resume building and internet safety.

Student in a cooking classThese workshops aim to enhance students’ understanding of various career fields. Guided by industry professionals, these sessions expose students to a spectrum of career options, shedding light on job responsibilities, educational pathways, and potential growth opportunities within each field.

Students touring a college campusStudents travel to local, state, and regional colleges and universities to gain exposure which will assist with the college selection process.

Students have the opportunity to participate in various leadership camps to bring them out of their comfort zone in a fun-filled, challenging, educational environment.

Talent Search Eligibility

  • Are a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen, and
  • Attend one of our Target Area Schools *7th-11th grade students attending other schools in Bowie, Cass, and Miler County will be considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Priority will be given to individuals who:
    • Have limited income.
    • Have parents who have not yet earned a Bachelor’s degree
    • Have an educator recommendation
