The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) was mandated through action of the 78th Texas Legislature to replace the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP). TSI requires students to be assessed in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics prior to enrolling at a Texas public college or university. Institutions have the flexibility to determine the appropriate path for individual students to take so as to be considered college ready and thus ready for college-level courses.

Beginning August 26, 2013, The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is requiring all Texas public colleges and universities to begin administering the new Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment. Any new student that has not completed college course work prior to 8/26/13 or met a state approved exemption will be subject to the new TSI Assessment requirements.

All students taking the TSI Assessment after August 26, 2013 must participate in a Pre-Assessment Activity. You must complete this Pre-Assessment Activity before you can enter Texarkana College. The PAA will explain the importance of the test and its purpose. Also, you will earn about its design and length.  You will answer sample questions in both subjects and review test taking tools that will be available. In addition, the PAA will outline options for course placement and resources for students.

You must create an account for the Accuplacer Practice APP. You will choose TSIA2-PAA to access the PAA.

Once you complete the assessment, the Accuplacer Practice App will email you a completion certificate that you must take to the Advising/Retention Center located in the Carl. M. Nelson Administration Building and give it to your adviser. You will also have the option of emailing the certificate to the adviser. The adviser will then prepare a Test Ticket for you to take to the Testing Center that will allow you to take the TSI Assessment. Failure to bring the certificate, will result in you having to complete the PAA again.

Please click here to complete the required Pre-Assessment Activity.

Texarkana College Requirements
Students can be admitted to Texarkana College without being TSI complete or exempt; however, they will not be able to register for most TC classes until they are TSI complete.

Students must obtain a TSI Ticket for Assessment & Placement from an Academic Advisor prior to visiting the Testing Center to take a TSI exam. A TSI Ticket for Assessment & Placement must be obtained for each test and/or retest. Each part of the TSI exam (Math, Reading, Writing) is $10.00 each. Exams are administered on a walk-in basis during testing center hours. Students must start TSI exams at least 2.5 hours before the testing center closes. Students must present a non-expired picture ID to take a TSI exam. Calculators are not allowed during TSI exams, the test contains a built in calculator. All other Testing Room Policies must be followed during TSI exams.

Students who are not TSI complete upon enrolling at TC must co-enroll in the appropriate developmental course(s) each semester until they become TSI complete. A TSI hold will be placed on the student’s record until appropriate TSI completion documentation (i.e., test score, course grade) is provided to the academic advisor.

TSI and Transfer Students

Texarkana College can determine college readiness on an individual basis once students have been tested or otherwise evaluated using TSI approved testing or exemption requirements. Texarkana College may review individual coursework of students who have successfully completed developmental and/or college level work but who are not determined to be TSI complete by the transferring institution.

Students transferring to Texarkana College from regionally accredited private or out-of-state institutions with grades of “C” or better in the courses listed below in all three TSI areas (writing, reading and math) will meet TSI requirements. Students need to mail or fax to Texarkana College Admissions and Records official copies of your transcripts showing these grades.

Students who do not have grades of “C” or better in all three areas, you must take an approved TSI test in those areas.

TSI Writing (TSI compliant in writing if you achieved a “C” or better in one of the two courses listed below)

  • ENGL 1301 (Composition I)
  • ENGL 1302 (Composition II)

Partial TSI Exemption

Students will have a partial TSI exemption and will be required to provide documentation to support your partial exemption if they have

  • Obtained a composite score on the appropriate test and the required minimum score on either the math or verbal English language arts. Students will be exempt from that individual section of TSI but will have to take the others sections. For example, students who score high enough on the SAT to be exempt from the math portion (Composite 1070 and Math 500), but not the writing or reading portions will need to take just the writing or reading sections of the TSI.
  • Completed college-level coursework in one or two of the three designated areas (reading, math, and writing) with a grade of “C” or better and so may be exempt from those sections of the TSI. Students will have to take the other portions of the TSI for which they are not exempt.

Approved TSI Scores

Students not TSI exempt must take the new Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Test.

Students may take any of these four tests from any institution of higher education but must provide Texarkana College with official score reports for that test.

Enrolled students who have attended Texarkana College prior to Fall 2013, and have remained continuously enrolled,* must submit scores required at the time of entry to Texarkana College. The Praxis tests are developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) for individuals aspiring to enter the teaching profession in the United States. These exams assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a successful career in education. Praxis tests cover a wide range of subjects, including elementary and secondary education, special education, and various content areas.

The Praxis series includes three categories of exams: Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core), Praxis Subject Assessments, and Praxis Content Knowledge for Teaching Assessments. The Core tests evaluate candidates’ competency in math, reading, and writing, while the Subject Assessments measure their understanding of specific subjects related to teaching, such as English, mathematics, social studies, and science. The Content Knowledge for Teaching Assessments focus on evaluating candidates’ subject-specific knowledge and their ability to effectively teach that subject to students. Whether aspiring teachers are preparing for initial certification, program admission, or advancement in their careers, Praxis exams serve as an important measure of their readiness and competence in the field of education.

The THEA Test consists of three sections: Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. Each section of the THEA Test is designed to measure a student’s academic skill against an established standard of competence. A student’s score on each section of the test is based on his or her performance in relation to the skills being tested. Scores are not related to how well other students have performed on the same section.

Where to Take the Test?
Prior to beginning the registration process, you must contact the institution where you would like to test to confirm your ability to test there.
