Cosmetology Department offers services to the community

Many of us like to look our best. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to go to the salon without spending a lot of money in today’s economy. The good news is the Cosmetology Department at Texarkana College offers many inexpensive services for the community.

The Cosmetology Department offers a variety of services to the community, such as shampooing, coloring, styling, relaxers, pedicures, manicures, eyebrow waxing, and more. Men haircuts start at $7, women haircuts and styles are $12, chemicals are $25 and up. Furthermore, senior citizens get 10 percent off. But that’s not all, all TC faculty and students also get 10 percent off.

The daytime hours of the student salon are Monday through Thursday from 9:15 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The evening hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In the spring, the Cosmetology Department will be put to the test in the hairathalon. In the hairathalon, they will get in teams and do a relay while doing procedures on mannequins in a certain amount of time. In November, they will be doing their annual Shear Madness style show event in the Truman Arnold Center.

Going through the process to become a cosmetologist can be extensive; nonetheless, it will be worth it in the end when cosmetology students become licensed cosmetologists.

Students interested in cosmetology have to go through advising and then have the pre-enrollment interview to begin the one-year program or two years for the night class. When cosmetology students successfully complete the program, they will receive a certificate. With the certificate they can take the written exam for the State Board. After passing the written exam, they are able to take the practical portion of the exam. Finally, with completion of the exam cosmetology students will receive their cosmetology license.

For Teresa Benton, Cosmetology Department Coordinator, many of her former students have gone on to do great things. In particular, one of her students moved to Dallas and opened an image consultant business.

“We’ve had a lot of success stories,” Benton said.

Some of the cosmetology students have always known they wanted to be a cosmetologist like Jill Brown.

“I like to improve people’s self-esteem,” Brown said.

Overall, cosmetology students Brown, Elaina Brooks, Laneya Pruitt, and Shauna Sanders all agreed that they love beautifying people.

In addition, it’s almost inevitable to not form a bond with loyal clients.

Third-time client Katie Nutley appreciates her hair dresser Jill Brown and describes the salon as “very comforting.”

Indeed, the student salon leaves clients with a desire to come back.
