Enrollment Advisor

Advise students individually and in groups about the development of educational options and the resources available.  Provide timely information on course/degree options and college policies.  Make appropriate referrals.  Perform related duties as required. Advises students regarding information, procedures and academic requirements of a specific programs or majors. Assist students in evaluating academic abilities and setting goals. Assist in the preparation of advising materials such as student information and advising guides. Present academic information to orientation groups and potential students and parents.  Assist in registration, verify student prerequisite and requirements.  Participation in professional conferences and individual professional development will be required.  Assist in training student workers who are assisting in the Office of Enrollment Services

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree, in Education, Counseling or field related to area of assignment preferred.

  • Skill in both verbal and written communication
  • Ability to interact continually with students, parents, faculty, administrators, and the public
  • Knowledge of Texarkana College and program/curriculum requirements
  • Knowledge of advising practices and principles
  • Skill in teaching/presentations
  • Knowledge of FERPA policies

Experience:

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved or one to four years’ experience working with college students in an academic advising/ counseling capacity.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provides academic advising for new, transfer, and continuing students.
  • Participate in the planning and conveyance of academic advising services and programs that promote comprehensive educational opportunities for all students.
  • Discuss linkage between academic preparation and the working environment.
  • Be familiar with TSI policies as it relates to Texarkana College.
  • Advises students on academic and career issues; identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications; if needed, refers student to counseling services; sets up an educational plan for the student to explore alternative careers and related majors.
  • Identifies options for student to satisfy degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and amendments to student’s program of study; assists students in completion.
  • Determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance; communicates findings to coaches and administrators.
  • Maintains student files and records; documents all pertinent student information; updates computerized information system regarding changes to student status.
  • Interprets and explains Texarkana College policies and procedures; participates in preparation of orientations and presents academic information to new students and parents during orientation.
  • Checks various forms for accuracy such as grade checks, overload petitions, curriculum changes; assists students in their completion.
  • Identifies options for student to satisfy specific degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and adjustments to student’s program of study.
  • Assists potential students by advising them of general academic requirements of a specific college programs; describes courses; disseminates information regarding registration procedures; prepares advising packets.
  • Gathers and/or calculates necessary information such as GPA’s or enrollment statistics; prepares various reports as requested.
  • Assists students with admission and registration/provides guidance in course selection in keeping with the student’s interests, values and abilities.
  • Serves on various committees to give input into the development, refinement and updating of university/college academic policies and procedures.
  • Cooperates with faculty by providing quality assistance for all academic advising needs of individuals or groups of students.
  • Responsible for understanding and interpreting the requirements and academic options available to students and assist pursuit in their area of interest.

Salary:

Commensurate within the Texarkana College pay scale for position.
